Q: A man rows at the rate of 5 kmph in still water. If the river runs at the rate of 1.5 kmph, it takes him 1 hour to row to a place and back. What is the distance?
A. 2 km 275 m B. 3 km 275m
C. 5 km 100 m D. 3 km 280 m

Answer and Explanation

Answer:2 km 275 m

Explanation:
Man’s rate downstream = (5 + 1.5) kmph = 6.5 kmph
=> Man’s rate upstream = (5 – 1.5) kmph = 3.5 kmph
=> Let the distance be x km
=> Total time taken to row x km and back
=> = (x / 6.5 + x / 3.5) = 1
=> x = 2.275 km
thus the distance = 2 km 275 m
