Two liquids are mixed in the ratio 5:3 and by selling the mixture at Rs 12.25 / liter, a profit of 16 2/3 percent is made. If the first liquid costs Rs 4 / liter more than the second, find the price per liter of each liquid.

A.    Rs 4 and Rs 12 Wrong Right

B.    Rs 8 and Rs 12 Wrong Right

C.    Rs 12 and Rs 8 Wrong Right

D.    Rs 8 and Rs 9 Wrong Right

Answer : Rs 8 and Rs 12

Explanation : SP of mixture = 12.25
CP of mixture = 12.25(100/116 2/3) = 10.50
Let the CP of the two liquids be Rs x and Rs x+4 respectively

Price liquid1=x+4, liquid2=x
Resultant = 10.5

Proportion 10.5-x : x-6.5

(10.5 - x)/(x – 6.5) = 5/3 =>x=8
Prices of the two liquids = Rs 8 and Rs 12

The cost of carpeting a room 18 m long with a carpet 75 cm wide at Rs 4.50 per metre is Rs 810. The breadth of the room is

A.    7 m Wrong Right

B.    7.5 m Wrong Right

C.    8 m Wrong Right

D.    8.5 m Wrong Right

Answer : 7.5 m

Explanation : Length of the carpet = (total cost)/(Rate /m) = (8100)/(46) = 180 m
Area of the room = Area of the carpet = (180 * 75/100) = 135 sq m
Hence, Breadth of the room = (area)/(length) = 135/18 = 7.5 m

In a race of 800m, if the ratio of the speeds of two participants P and R is 3:4, and P has a start of 120m, then R beats P by:

A.    100m Wrong Right

B.    80m Wrong Right

C.    90m Wrong Right

D.    110m Wrong Right

Answer : 80m

Explanation : As P has a start of 120m, P has to cover 680m while R has to cover 800m.
Now, when P covers 3m, R covers 4m.
Hence, when R covers 800m, P covers (800 * 3) / 4 = 600m
Therefore, R beats P by 80m.

A person covers a certain distance at a certain speed. If he increases his speed by 50% then he takes 15 minutes less to cover the same distance. Find the time taken by him to cover the distance at the original speed.

A.    45 min Wrong Right

B.    30 min Wrong Right

C.    22.5 min Wrong Right

D.    indeterminate Wrong Right

Answer : 45 min

Explanation : Speed is inversely proportional to time, i.e. Speed α 1 / time
If the speed increases to 3/2 times the normal speed, then the time decreases to 2/3 times the original time
1/3 of original time = 15 min
Original time = 3 × 15 = 45 min

The interest on Rs 750 for 2 yrs is the same as the true discount on Rs 960 due 2 yrs hence. If the rate of interest is the same in both cases, it is

A.    12%     Wrong Right

B.    14%     Wrong Right

C.    15%     Wrong Right

D.    16 2/3% Wrong Right

Answer : 14%

Explanation : SI on Rs 750 = TD on Rs 960
This means PW of Rs 960 due 2 yrs hence is Rs 750.
Hence, TD = Rs (960 – 750) = Rs 210
Thus, SI on Rs 750 for 2 yrs is Rs 210
Hence, Rate = (100 * 210) / (750 * 2) = 14%
